3 Questions To Ask Yourself Before Starting a Business
Starting a business sounds appealing, doesn’t it? You get to be your own boss, do what you love and work your own hours (which really means choosing which 10-18 hours to work). But there are things you need to ask yourself before you start a business which you may not think about in the moment.
The questions below will help you make the necessary, big decisions about starting your business and prepare properly for its long-term success.
1. Do You Really Want to Run Your Own Business?
Sometimes we want to start a business without even thinking about the “why”.
The wrong reasons to start your business might include:
- Thinking you’ll have more time with your family (you’ll probably have less)
- You want to make a ton of money (you might not and it might take longer than you think)
- You hate your company or boss and need to get away (you’ll meet customers like just them)
- You want freedom from having someone to always answer to (you’ll have more bosses: your customers or clients)
The right reasons:
- You’re passionate about what you want to create
- You believe it will fill a real need in the world
- You thrive on independence
So, ask yourself: What sparked your business idea and is it something you are extremely passionate about doing? You’ll need this passion to sustain you when it gets difficult.
2. What Will You Sell and How Much Should You Charge?
What is your area of expertise?
Are you driven enough to invest time and money doing it?
Will people pay you for it?
You might not consider yourself an “expert” at anything, but you don’t need to be one; but you do need products or services good enough that people will pay you for it.
Also keep in mind that Impostor Syndrome is terribly common and when you start your business, you need to get over it.
If you’re not sure what you’re good at or what you want to make and sell, ask around. Your family, friends, and people in your network might know your strengths better than you do.
Another way to find your great business idea when starting a business:
What frustrates you, and can you come up with something to correct it?
Next: How much will you charge? You don’t want to be overpriced, but you don’t want to price your products too low either.
This is where research comes in handy as you want to look at what your competitors’ price their products at.
Are your items the same, more luxurious or simpler? You also want to take into consideration the packaging and postage costing as well as maintaining the business overall.
Take time to discover where you fit in the market for your target consumers?
3. Who Will Be Your Customers and How Will they find you?
Marketing and sales isn’t easy for everyone. They require pitching over email, making phone calls, navigating social media ads, dealing with difficult people, and, in general, putting yourself out there with the high chance of being disappointed.
But the good news is that if you’re passionate about what you’re doing, self-promotion won’t be as hard.
Until you make your first sale, your business will be just an idea. You need customers to make your business a reality and, just as important, a solid understanding of your customers to keep your business up and growing.
But first: Who are your customers?
When starting a business, you need to tailor your business to a specific target audience. This will be helpful when you are advertising and marketing your business to the niche audience and producing products that they would consume.
You need to remember your business cannot be for anyone and everyone, find a niche market and focus on them as this will lead to financial rewards later on.
Business owners know that clearly defining the ideal customer is the key to high conversions.
A buyer persona is a researched-based representation of your ideal customer who will be the most interested in your products or services. As a business, your products and services solve your customers’ problems and make their lives easier.
Ensure that you only focus on selling your products and services to those who need them the most.
